Author’s Note: Writing

These are pieces I wrote to work something out, not to publish something.

Most of them started as thinking I couldn’t finish in my head — about attention, and why lazy was always the wrong word for it; about faith, and what I actually want to hand my sons; about the difference between a home and a cage. I wrote each one in the voice I had at the time, and I’ve left them that way. The oldest is a research paper I wrote in high school in 2003.

Rather than recount events or assign blame, I usually choose metaphor: not to obscure the truth, but to approach it with enough distance to allow reflection instead of reaction.

If there is a philosophy beneath these words, it is this:
We are always becoming, and who we become is shaped less by what happens to us than by how we respond.
